One of the tenets of Zen Buddhism is that everything is impermanent; in a state of continual change. Our bodies and minds change in minute ways every day. It’s only the cumulative changes we observe in photos and other metrics.
I maintain that impermanence extends to everything in life, from the brands we use to the genres we read, and even the businesses we name.
By now, you’ve noticed the name change of my Substack from Working Writers to Tiny Tribes.
This post explains why.
It’s Not the Only Change
Earlier today, I also changed the root domain to one I already owned, www.barrybazmorris.com. My name isn’t going to change, so I figured it was a pretty safe choice. 😉
And since tinytribes.com wasn’t available, I opted for the personal domain. I’d been wanting to do this for a while anyway. (BTW, Substack charges $50 for the privilege. 😬)
There was another reason for the change, too.
My Love for All Things Apple👨💻
Right now you’re thinking, …huh? 🤔
You see, I’m a total Apple Fanboy. I use all things Apple, from my iPhone, AirPods Pro, Apple Watch, AirPods Max, iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, MacBook Air, HomePod Mini, etc.
However, beyond the gadgets, it’s the origin story of Apple Computer that I’ve always found to be most inspiring. It’s a given that Steve Jobs had serious issues with a lot of things in life, but that aside, what he and a small band of followers accomplished in a just a few short years, completely changed the paradigm of personal computing forever.
They started as a tiny tribe and grew organically.
That’s always been my style, too. I’m an introvert and a solo business owner. I like doing things alone or in a small group.
I’m not one for parties and large group events because they drain me faster than a PC battery on standby. 🤭
In a Way, I’m Changing the Substack Paradigm
The existing paradigm is that tiny Substacks (tribes) can grow into larger tribes with hundreds and thousands of followers, while a good percentage of followers will become paying subscribers.
I like to say that paying subscribers are like gold and we should treat them like it.
That revenue model alone is fine for many writers. There’s nothing wrong with it at all. It’s honorable and trustworthy… but it’s slow growth.
The Fast-er Lane
However, there is an alternative paradigm for those who want a shortcut to earning recurring monthly income without creating endless content and hoping for an increase in paid subscribers.
My new program, Beyond The Subscription, is a partnership where I work one-on-one with another Substacker to carefully plan and implement their NSO over a period time and remain accessible for as long as they desire.
It’s how tiny tribes can become big businesses.
Where You Place Your Energy Matters
I’ve recently shifted my energy from converting more paid subscribers, to recruiting more consulting clients. I’m helping other Substackers grow their revenue by helping them create and launch their Next Step Offers.
For Substackers who want to launch a service or a coaching program, based on knowledge they already possess from a former career, degree program, or life experience, there are usually two to three authority topics that they can create an NSO around.
Within this model, it’s not uncommon to generate recurring monthly revenues of $2K-$5K in much less time than it takes from a purely paid subscriber base.
Hence, the name change.
You can join my special email list here to learn more about Beyond The Subscription.
It’s mostly a daily email list because the information is often time-sensitive, and doors open and close often.
If you don’t like that, I encourage you to place the emails in a folder and read them when possible. They’re great for learning how I’m working my program.
